About Madurai
Madurai is a major city in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, closely associated with the Tamil language — the third Tamil Sangam is said to have been held in the city. It is often referred to as "Thoonga Nagaram", meaning "the city that never sleeps".
Madurai is a historical city rich in culture and heritage, with landmark religious sites attracting tourists from all over the world — Meenakshi Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, Gandhi Museum, Alagarkovil, Tiruparankundram, Kazimar Big Mosque, Jain Centres and St. Mary's Cathedral among them. Famous for its jasmine flower, the "Malligai Maanagar" celebrates numerous festivals — the Chithirai festival chief among them — and Jallikattu, the popular historical sport, is held during the Pongal festival.
